Obamacare or The Affordable Care Act (ACA)

Health Insurance in 2014 and beyond ?

The Affordable Care Act or Obamacare mandates that everyone have health insurance if they can afford it by Janurary 1, 2014. Obamacare is a massive law that changes the entire U.S. health system. The main goal of Obamacare is to provide affordable health care to everyone in the U.S.

"Obamacare -also known as the Affordable Care Act, or the ACA - is a law to ensure that all Americans have access to affordable health insurance. It does this by offering consumers discounts (known as tax credits) on government-sponsored health insurance plans, and by expanding the Mediaid assistance program to include more people who don't have it their budgets to pay for health care." ~ Karen Politaz

The Tax Penalty for not signing up

Most people must have health coverage in 2014 or pay a penalty. If you don't have coverage, you will have to pay a tax of either 1% of your income, or $95 per adult ($47.50 per child), whichever is higher. You will have to pay the tax on your 2015 income taxes. The penalty will increase each year until 2016, then indexed by inflation.

More Affordable Coverage

The ACA makes health coverage cheaper in a few ways:

Medicaid Expansion: Many states have expanded Medicaid. Up to now, Medicaid covered only people on the "five finger" test (i.e., or the aged, blind, disabled, children, pregnant/parenting adults).

Tax Credits: The federal government will provide tax credits to people who do not have affordable coverage through their jobs etc.

Cost-Sharing Reductions: The federal government will also lower deductibles for some families. Some people may see their deductibles go down by as much as 80%.

Understanding the Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans !

Bronze plan     60 % of covered medical expenses paid by the plan; 40 % by the consumer

Silver plan       70 % of covered medical expenses paid by the plan; 30 % by the consumer

Gold plan         80 % of covered medical expenses paid by the plan; 20 % by the consumer

Platinum plan   90 % of covered medical expenses paid by the plan; 10 % by the consumer

The higher the share of covered medical expenses paid by the plan, the lower the consumer's out-of-pocket cost. However, this scenario also translates into a higher premium. If you are relatively healthy and do not anticipate many medical expenses, a bronze or silver plan may be the right solution. If you have health conditions that necessitate frequent care and services, you may find it advantageous to select a gold or platinum plan.

Getting Coverage ... Getting Help !

While the ACA does make insurance more affordable for many lower-income families, the process applying for that coverage is very complicated. The eligibility rules create a highly complex program structure, particularly for families. It is not government insurance - though the government may help you pay for it.
